Classic Cars of 1967
Shelby Mustang GT 500
A true standout among the classic cars of 1967 was the Shelby GT 500. This car, created by Ford factory tuner Carroll Shelby, was designed to combine the speed and power of racing Mustangs with a car that you could take to the streets. This muscle car, which could come with twin racing stripes down the middle, could go 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and featured 355 horsepower in a V8 engine.
Chevrolet Camaro
For 1967, a car was introduced that would change the face of driving. No discussion of the classic cars of 1967 would be complete without mentioning the Chevy Camaro. The Camaro, which premiered as a two door coupe or convertible, was the car to be seen in, it was available in RS, SS or Z/28 trim, with a classic style housing a powerful V8 engine under the hood.
Toyota 2000 GT
Although Japanese imports were not nearly as popular in 1967 as they are today, this Toyota model earns its place among the classic cars of 1967 for its appearance as Sean Connery’s go to automobile in the classic James Bond Film You Only Live Twice. That along with its (at the time) futuristic name was reason enough for someone to want to own one. This two door coupe was considered the first Japanese “Supercar” and its aerodynamic shape made its appearance as enviable as any Italian or German made sportscar on the market at the time.
Buick Skylark
Another popular car of 1967, generally among the older set, was the Buick Skylark, which has enjoyed six different production runs over its career. The Buick Skylark had a brief moment of fame in the movie My Cousin Vinny, where its similarity to the Pontiac Tempest proves to be a key plot point. The 1967 Skylark model was right in the middle of its longest production run to date, and is a prototypical Buick. It enjoyed an intermediate size chassis, larger than earlier models, and was available as a two door convertible, hardtop or coupe, or a four door hardtop or sedan. Most models came with a V8 engine which produced 220 horsepower.
Pontiac GTO
While the Buick Skylark bore similarities to the Pontiac Tempest, the GTO was actually modeled on the Tempest, and was built to be something of a “super Tempest,” a race car that wasn’t really a race car. The GTO, a popular model among car enthusiasts of the ‘60s, was another of the classic cars of 1967. Its eight taillights and chrome rocker panels gave it an unmistakably distinctive look, and it wasn’t short on power, with a V8 engine that produced 360 bhp.
