Sports Scores of 1967
Great Sports Scores of 1967: Green Bay Packers 35, Kansas City Chiefs 10
The year 1967 was an incredibly important one for football, as it was the year the first Super Bowl ever was played. Of course, it wasn’t called the Super Bowl back then, it was just the NFL-AFL championship game, but everyone realized the importance of the meeting of the champions of the two major football leagues. It was the storied National Football League against the upstart American Football League, with bragging rights for the winner. The outcome of the game was never really in doubt, as the NFL benefitted from a larger and stronger pool of players, but still, among sports scores of 1967, that 35-10 Packers victory will long be remembered.
Great Sports Scores of 1967: Toronto Maple Leafs 4, Montreal Canadiens 2
This is one of the sports scores of 1967 that will never be forgotten by Leafs fans, as it represents the last time their historic franchise won the Stanley Cup, as they defeated the Montreal Canadiens four games to two. The Canadiens, fortunately, need not linger on the memory, as they won the cup the year before, the year after, and in total have won 24 Stanley Cups, making them the New York Yankees of professional hockey. That being said, no Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup in nearly 20 years (the last team to do it? The Canadiens) so an all Canadian final will always have some significance.
Great Sports Scores of 1967: St. Louis Cardinals 4, Boston Red Sox 3
In 2004, the Cardinals faced the Red Sox as Boston made history, winning the World Series for the first time in over 85 years. Sadly for the Red Sox, that curse-breaking event was decades away when they met the Cardinals back in 1967. While the Red Sox had a stellar team that year, led by 1967 MVP Carl Yastrzemski, they were no match for the devastating pitching rotation of St. Louis, which featured two of the greatest pitchers of all time, Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton. Still, the Red Sox gave the Cardinals all they could handle, winning games 2, 5 and 6 before finally losing the decisive game at home 7 to 2.
Great Sports Scores of 1967: Philadelphia 76ers 4, San Francisco Warriors 2
Rounding out the sports scores of 1967 is the final total for the NBA Championship, which ended with the 76ers taking four games to the Warriors 2. San Francisco (now Golden State), was no doubt disheartened after a 141 to 135 overtime loss in Game 1, but they rallied to win Game 3, 130-124, and staved off elimination in Game 5 with a 117 to 109 triumph. Still, in the end, Wilt Chamberlain was able to lead his team to a series victory, edging the 76ers 125-122 in the decisive Game 6.
